    2. Basic Research: 1. Neuroprotection with estrogens in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
      2. Biomarkers of neural injury

    Narrative Description of Research

Working in a neuroanatomy laboratory and in the operating room, my clinical research has investigated new and safer surgical approaches to complex tumors and vascular lesions of the skull base. In the lab, I investigate the neuroprotective effects of estrogens against focal and global cerebral ischemia in a rat model. Studies include delivery of the drug before and after the ischemic insult, and the pattern/protection from cell death thereafter. Other projects have investigated intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage, looking at ways to protect nerve cells from irreversible injury following bleeding. We also investigate programmed cell death (apoptosis) in these models, and look at biomarkers that might preceed the actual neuronal death.
