Place of birth: Calgary, Canada
Dr. Peter Black has been Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at both the Brigham
and Women's Hospital and the Children's Hospital since 1987. He
is also the Franc D. Ingraham Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard
Medical School. He has seen the service grow clinically from 600
cases in 1986 to 2200 in 1995; and the development of the vascular
service with Dr. Philip Stieg, stereotactic function with Dr. Eben
Alexander, pediatric neurosurgery with Drs. Madsen, Scott and Goumnerova
and spine service with Dr. Eric Woodard. He has also seen the blossoming
of radiosurgery in the linear accelerator at the Brigham and Women's
Hospital, a brain tumor multidisciplinary effort which provides
compassionate, cost-effective, and cutting edge care for brain tumor
patients; and the development of extremely exciting three-dimensional
techniques including the new M.R. therapy unit.

- Hydrocephalus
He has written extensively in these topics, with over 250 publications;
he also has an extensive operative experience which includes over
1600 brain tumor operations since coming to the Brigham and Women's
and Children's Hospitals.
Specialized techniques he uses include:
- Operations in eloquent areas using local anesthesia
- Surgery for brain tumors in the MR Therapy Unit
- Microsurgical procedures in difficult areas such as the ventricles
and the pineal region
- Surgery using three dimensional imaging
- Transsphenoidal surgery
- Skull base techniques in collaboration with Dr. Ivo Janecka
- Hemispherectomy and other surgical procedures for epilepsy
