Brain Tumor Center

The Brain Tumor Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute provides a multidisciplinary brain tumor clinic, individual clinics in radiation therapy, chemotherapy and neurosurgery, a tumor board and radiosurgery evaluation and is a closely coordinated effort between Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital. The multidisciplinary clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and management of all tumors of the nervous system.  Special interests are low grade gliomas, astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, anaplastic astrocytomas, glioblastomas, meningiomas, pineal gland tumors, acoustic neuromas, pituitary tumors, brain cysts, and delayed effects of  tumor treatment.  Areas of particular emphasis are: image guided surgery, craniotomy with brain mapping and skull base surgery. The intraoperative MRI is particularly important as an adjuvant to tumor surgery. The group includes Dr. Peter Black, Dr. Alexandra Golby, Dr. Patrick Wen of Neurology, Dr. Naren Ramakrishna of Radiation Oncology, and Dr. Elizabeth Maher of Medical Oncology.  The associated clinical staff responsible for the management of patients are Nancy Olsen-Bailey, R.N., Judy Hudson, R.N. and Donna Dello-Iacono, R.N.

The Brain Tumor Group carries out several kinds of evaluation.  First, there is a Brain Tumor Board every Friday at 11:30 A.M. in which cases that require multi-disciplinary input are reviewed.  Second, there is a multi-disciplinary Brain Tumor Clinic from 1:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. every Friday.  Third, the Service provides teleradiology and telemedicine service. Last there is a consultation service for evaluating problematic cases. The Brain Tumor Group at Brigham and Women's Hospital provides up-to-date care for all patients with tumors of the central nervous system.

Please direct inquiries to (617)732-6826 for Nancy Olsen-Bailey, R.N., Judy Hudson, R.N. and Donna Dello-Iacono, R.N. or call the clinic at (617)732-6810.

Cerebrovascular Center

The Cerebrovascular Center is a multidisciplinary group consisting staff from Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuroradiology, Interventional Radiology, Anesthesiology, Neuro-ophthamology and Radiation Therapy. The center offers coordinated care to patients with any cerebrovascular disorder including aneurysm, carotid occlusive disease, vascular malformations (AVM's, cavernous malformations, venous malformations) and stroke, using state of the art surgical and endovascular techniques. Novel technology like the intraoperative MR and functional scanning (SPECT) allows the center to offer sophisticated surgical planning for some patients whose lesions were previously deemed inoperable.

Please contact the cerebrovascular office at (617)525-7777 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Hydrocephalus Service

Adult hydrocephalus is an important condition often neglected. This group treats patients with hydrocephalus of all kinds including idiopathic and normal pressure hydrocephalus.  Dr. Peter Black is well known for his clinical and research work for patients with hydrocephalus. During the past five years he and his team have participated in a national research project testing a programmable shunt valve and its use in the management of hydrocephalus. The pressure on the programmable shunt can be increased or decreased without additional surgery.  Presently volumetric imaging has been added.

The hydrocephalus group also specializes in the care of patients thought to have idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. Utilizing standard and investigational diagnostic testing, patients are evaluated to assess whether a shunt placement would be helpful.

Please contact Nancy Olsen-Bailey, R.N. or Donna Dello-Iacono at (617)732-6826 for more information. To schedule an appointment call (617)732-6810.

Pituitary Group The Pituitary Group is a multi-disciplinary clinic consisting of representation from neurosurgery and neuroendocrinology that evaluates and treats patients with pituitary adenomas, pituitary cysts, craniopharyngiomas or other pituitary abnormalities.

Among the techniques available are endoscopic pituitary surgery, sterotactic radiotherapy and image guided trans-sphenoidal surgery.

Please contact the office at (617)732-6810 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Skull Base Surgery Group The Skull Base Surgery group specializes in tumors of the skull base and uses multiple approaches to create the best approach. These tumors include chordomas, meningiomas, acoustic neuromas and sinus carcinomas.

Please contact the office at (617)732-6810 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Epilepsy Surgery Group

The Epilepsy Surgery group combines neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropsychologists, and social workers to create a combined approach to patients with seizures.  Epilepsy of all types is treated.  Among the surgical techniques used are temporal lobe resection, resection of abnormal tissue, and long term monitoring.

Spine Surgery

The Spine Service at Brigham and Women's Hospital emphasizes complex spine cases utilizing microdiscectomy, complex instrumentation for tumors, trauma and degenerative disorders.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery/Radiotherapy Center

The Radiosurgery Group is a leader in the clinical applications of stereotactically directed radiation.  This center cares for patients with intracranial benign or malignant tumors, intracranial vascular malformations (arteriovenous malformations or cavernous angiomas) and other conditions.
